Skills Over Hope: Why Your Liberation Depends on What You Can Do, Not What You Wish For

Let's be real: hope doesn't stop bullets. Hope doesn't prevent assault. Hope doesn't protect your family when systems designed to harm you are working exactly as intended.

I'm not saying hope is worthless—it's the fuel that keeps us moving. But hope without skills? That's just wishful thinking dressed up as activism. And in 2025, wishful thinking can get you killed.

Why Self-Defense Is Political

Every time a Black person learns to shoot, it's political. Every time a trans person carries pepper spray, it's political. Every time an immigrant family creates a safety plan, it's political.

Because the same systems that deny us healthcare, housing, and human dignity also want us defenseless. They want us to believe that calling 911 will save us—even when those same responders have historically been our oppressors. They want us to think that 'thoughts and prayers' and voting every four years is enough to keep us safe.

But here's what they don't want you to know: when marginalized communities arm themselves with knowledge, training, and tools, we become harder to control. We become harder to harm. We become the authors of our own safety stories.

Skills Build Power

Real liberation isn't just about changing laws or shifting culture—though those matter. Real liberation is about building the capacity to protect yourself and your community right now, today, with your own hands and your own knowledge.

That means learning to shoot accurately under stress. It means knowing how to de-escalate dangerous situations. It means understanding your legal rights when carrying. It means building networks of people who have your back.

These aren't just individual skills—they're community defense skills. Because when one of us is safer, all of us are safer.
