The headlines are buzzing with news of another ceasefire in Gaza. While any pause in violence is a relief, it is crucial that we, as a community committed to liberation, look beyond the mainstream narrative. A ceasefire is not peace. It is not justice. And it is certainly not liberation.
What Mainstream Coverage Misses
Mainstream media often frames these agreements as a resolution, a diplomatic success that puts the conflict on hold. But for Palestinians, these ceasefires are frequently seen as tactical pauses for Israel, not genuine steps toward sovereignty. The underlying conditions of occupation, blockade, and systemic violence remain unchanged. The narrative of 'both sides' is a dangerous oversimplification that ignores the massive power imbalance and the reality of a colonized people resisting their oppressor.
This matters for community safety everywhere because it teaches us to critically examine the narratives we are fed. When we see how easily the struggle for freedom can be repackaged as a 'conflict' that just needs to be 'managed,' it sharpens our awareness of how our own movements for justice are often diluted and misrepresented.
A Grounding Tip for Heavy News
Absorbing this news is heavy. It's easy to feel overwhelmed. Here’s a simple grounding practice: Find a quiet space and plant your feet firmly on the ground. Close your eyes and take three deep, slow breaths. With each exhale, imagine releasing the tension from your shoulders and jaw. Feel the solid earth beneath you, supporting you. This small act reminds you to stay present and anchored, even in the face of global injustice.
Staying informed is an act of solidarity, but so is caring for our own nervous systems.
